Wilfred

Producer/Director & Writer – live-action/animation

Inspired by the poetry of World War One poet Wilfred Owen, the film combines live-action and animation in a stylistic story about artists’ response to war. Poetry and image inspire me. Shot on 35mm film, one of the first dramas in the UK to use what is now an industry standard, the digital intermediate process. Winner of Royal Television Society Awards.

Wilfred stars Michael Higgs as Wilfred Owen and features the voices of Edward Fox, Robert Duncan, Derek Jacobi and poet Tony Harrison. Cinematography, the wonderful Alistair McKenzie. Lead animator, drawn animation David Bunting. Cutout & replacement animation, Robert & Jan Jefferson. Original music, Dave Bainbridge.

Okay, make a list of all the things you’re not supposed to do in short films save working with animals and children and then, we did them all. Mixing animation and live-action confused most Film festivals. What small boxes we squeeze imagination into.
